RE:                              Equality in Educational Programs and Employment

DATE:                                    September, 2016

The Educational Amendment of 1972, Title IX, prohibits sex discrimination in federally assisted educational programs.   The basic provisions assure every person the right and opportunity to participate in any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.   In addition, Title IX ensures against sex discrimination relating to program admissions, treatment of students and employment.

Further, the New Jersey Constitution and legislative action guarantee each child in the public schools equal educational opportunity regardless of race, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, affectional or sexual orientation, gender, religion, disability, or socioeconomic status. (6A:7-1.1) To insure these basic rights, the Commissioner of Education and the State Board of Education have developed regulations outlined in the N.J. Administrative Code 6:4-1.1 concerning sex equality in educational programming.

In keeping with the spirit of Title IX and New Jersey law, the Medford Board of Education passed a resolution on June 25, 1975, supporting these provisions and has further appointed an Affirmative Action Officer for the district.
