Welcome to music! My name is Rachel Smith, and I am thrilled to be the music teacher at Cranberry Pines. I teach general music for all K-5 classes, 4th and 5th grade Chorus, and 5th grade Band, as well as instrumental lessons for some of the band students.
I graduated from The College of New Jersey with a major in Music Education, with a concentration in flute performance, and a minor in Philosophy. After receiving my degree I spent a year teaching on Roatan, a small island off the coast of Honduras. This was a wonderful experience which gave me a unique perspective on diversity and a sense of resourcefulness which I strive to bring into my classroom every day. After Roatan, I returned to New Jersey and taught elementary music for a few years before coming to Medford.
When not at Cranberry Pines, I teach private music lessons and perform in various local ensembles. Hiking, camping, and scuba diving are some of my favorite things to do while exploring new places. In my free time I like to read, play music, and experiment with vegetarian cooking.
I love teaching music to students and having them engage through singing, movement, composition, playing instruments, and reflective listening activities. I believe that music is a wonderful way to connect with people and the world around us, and that everyone is a musician at heart! I am very excited to see my students grow throughout the year, and hope that everyone is ready for a musical school year!
