The 2018-2019 school year will begin my 15th year working as a sixth grade science teacher in Medford. Prior to that I taught seventh grade in Bayville New Jersey, and high school physics and chemistry in Absegami Highschool in Galloway Township.
Sixth Grade is my absolute favorite grade to teach. It's the first year of middle school and there are so many new social and academicl components to this year that can be a little nerve-wracking, but with possitive reinforcement and an "I'll get there when it's right for me" mindset (I love the idea of "The Power of Yet!"), this can defintely be a year of tremendous growth. Students of this age seem to want adult connections and guidance while also seeking independence in inderstanding the world around them. This year in science is all about patterns and cycles, and how we can recognize patterns that are predictable in our world to help understand and anticipate phenomena. Meanwhile, students may be feeling like their world is choas with all the new classes and friends, but we'll focus on consistency and how to recognize the amazing nature of science and being unique individuals in our school and world!

please notify me if your child is spending more than 20 minutes on any one homework assignment. Some of our kids try so hard to do the right thing and please the teacher, but 1 night of HW should never take an hour (if we assign something over 3-5 days, then each nt may require time = an hour). I encourage reinforcement of ideas and practice on short homeworks, I'm not a huge fan of daily HW.
Our curriculum reflects the New Jersey Student Learning Standards. The curriculum was created by the Smithsonian Science Education Center and is called My Generation: Science and Technology Concepts for Middle School (STCMS). STCMS is a hands on, inquiry based program that integrates engineering and design throughout each unit. Each classroom will have a class set of textbooks and your child will have access to the textbook online for use outside of the classroom.
I grew up in Southampton New Jersey, and at the time Lenape HS served my town, Medford and Mount Laurel. I went to Rutgers University and received a degree in Natural Resource Management ( managing fisheries and forests, ecology in biology) and minored in Marine Sciences . I worked for Rutgers University as a research scientist at the Rutgers University Marine Field Station & Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve (RUMFS & JCNERR for short). Before doing that I worked at environmental education camps for the YMCA in the Poconos and right here at Camp Ockanickon (Stockwell Day Camp) Medford, then I moved to Tybee Island outside of Savannah Georgia and worked for the University of Georgia.
You might be wondering at this point how I got into teaching? While working at the YMCA and UGA was fun, but short-term. When I started my long-term research work for Rutgers I received many requests to interact with the public and teach at community days, eventually I started teaching teachers how to teach marine science. Ultimately I realized I really liked working with people teaching about marine science, especially kids. After working for Medford for a few years I receive my Masters degree in Educational Technology (I learned how to become a more effective teacher, not a technology teacher). I’ve also served on many professional development committee‘s in my time at Medford, and I’m always looking for new ways to help students mori easily grasp the content we’re studying to help them make sense of the natural world and find their connection to it.
